Other Activities
Discipleship Small Groups
16 youth discipleship groups, using the
NWAS materials, are operating and fully supported by the Deep Roots
fieldwork team. These groups are based at a teacher t raining college, a training hospital,
schools and churches throughout the District. These Discipleship Small Groups have assisted the Deep
Roots team (and continue to do so) in the development of the materials by acting
as pilot groups, helping to direct the constructions of the books. Whilst the
setting up and supporting of discipleship groups will mainly be done by the
Ambassadors once they are trained, we are committed to visiting, nurturing and
supporting the groups on a bi-weekly basis.
Radio Programmes
The main drawback of the discipleship programmes is their written nature
which, in a verbal culture, not all are comfortable with. In response
to this, Deep Roots has been broadcasting the content of the NWAS books, as a
discussion, on local radio.
Deep Roots Uganda has already broadcasted 132 programmes(as of November 2009), presented in both English (the national language) and
in a combination of vernacular languages. The radio station broadcasts throughout the
district, into neighbouring districts and also into nearby areas of the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
Clergy and Lay Reader Sensitization
A further aspects of our
work is with the clergy and church leaders, where we seek to emphasize the
importance of the youth in the church and in society. The way we approach this is by engaging
with the clergy and church leaders, holding specific training sessions for them
, being invited to speak at the local Bible college and lay readers school, as
well as by encouraging the clergy and church leaders to take an interest and
participate in the development and production of Deep Roots' written materials,
in the delivery of the Ambassador Training programme and in the youth
discipleship small groups.
