Developing Materials

The development of written resources gave birth to two discipleship programmes: NWAS (Now We Are Saved) covering the foundations of Christian faith, and FTA (Finding The Answers) addressing, in greater detail, specific topic from a Biblical perspective.  The basis of these programmes is culturally appropriate discipleship books targeted at addressing the felt need of the youth.  These books are the culmination of many years of research amongst the youth with community-wide input into their production.

NWAS is the foundation programme consisting of a series of 10 small discipleship booklets used in a small group sitting, aimed at promoting discussion (something which is not the cultural norm) and engagement with the topics.  Currently two introductory books to NWAS have been produced, as well as 5 completed NWAS books covering 'What it is to be a Christian', 'How to Pray', 'How to Study the Bible' (book 1 & 2) and 'An overview of the Bible'.  5 remain work in progress.

FTA is the follow up programme to the foundations laid by the NWAS programme.  It seeks to address the more thorny issues and misunderstanding that the youth face.  FTA consists of 6 books, each covering a topics such as 'God', 'Sin', 'Jesus', 'the Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts', 'Serving God Where We Today' and 'Putting our Faith into Practice'. We current have drafts of some of these books and aim to finalize them over the next 3 years.

The challenge in producing the material is not merely presenting theological truths, but in knowing how those truths can be communicated in a way the youth can easily comprehend, and equally important how those truths relate and can be applied to everyday life.

In addition to the NWAS and FTA discipleship booklets, the Deep Roots Uganda team are in the process of producing Ambassador Leadership Training materials, providing reference materials for the Ambassadors and a complete resource to select, train, commission new Ambassadors and implement the discipleship programmes.
