About Us

Deep Roots Uganda is an ecumenical youth discipleship programme that operates under the umbrella of the Church of Uganda and has been hosted by South Rwenzori Diocese in Western Uganda since 2001.

We work with the youth, which in this context is 12 to 30 year olds, supporting and encouraging them to engage with, understand and live out, their Christian faith in a practical way. As well as helping the youth adopt servant leadership exemplified by Jesus, as opposed to the self serving models of leadership they commonly see around them, Deep Roots Uganda encourages significant change in mindsets and the adoption of a Biblical worldview. Deep Roots Uganda seeks the integration of youth into the established church and encourages the youth to take personal ownership of their faith in their everyday lives and to share in the spreading of the Gospel.

Deep Roots Uganda is a growing grassroots organisation that has evolved organically as a small team set about to understand and meet the real needs of young people in Kasese District, western Uganda. Research, carried out over several years by the team, identified that while Christian youth expressed interest in learning more about Christianity, they received little support from the mainstream church, and had few resources, let alone any culturally relevant ones, to help them grow.

Following the research phase the Deep Roots team began work on a strategy for reaching the youth.  This entails working in partnership with the local Christian community to develop written discipleship materials to suit the context and culture, setting up and supporting weekly discipleship groups and creating a leadership training programme to equip and support volunteer youth leaders throughout the District.
